Beasley Esports announces Jae Won Choi, most commonly known as “Junkbuck”, has been named as the new co-head coach of Overwatch League’s Houston Outlaws. He will begin his new role, effective immediately.
Junkbuck’s initial charge will be to help finalize the Outlaws’ 2021 Roster under the team’s first full season as part of the Beasley Esports umbrella and ownership.
\”My goal in Overwatch is to never stop improving, challenge myself and develop winning teams,” said Junkbuck. “I am very excited to help the Outlaws become one of the best teams in Overwatch and make the fans proud. I am looking forward to joining and working with an amazing staff and roster of new players.\”
“We are so excited for next season as we poise the Outlaws franchise to become a force in OWL and a team worthy of one of the largest and most passionate fanbases in the league,” said Beasley Esports Chief Operating Officer, Lori Burgess. “Junkbuck was our first choice for this expanded leadership role and we aim to elevate our team and the city of Houston as esports continues to dominate the sports entertainment landscape!\”
Prior to joining the Outlaws, Junkbuck was the league-winning assistant coach for the San Francisco Shock, where he helped the team strategically and managed its players for the past two and a half seasons.
His coaching credentials run deep. He began his career as an Overwatch coach in 2017 while working with an amateur team when he was discovered by the League and the San Francisco Shock. Junkbuck went on to assume assistant coaching responsibilities in mid-2018 and helped lead and develop a multilingual roster.
The Orange County native was able to assist in leading the Shock to become the Overwatch League’s most winning team-winning multiple Stage Finals, the Overwatch League’s Grand Championship (in 2019 and 2020) and the Overwatch World Cup (in 2019).
The Houston Outlaws are looking forward to Junkbuck exerting a strong role in engineering the team’s 2021 roster, teaming up yet again with Harsha Band- where together they helped coach the winning World Cup Team in 2019 and the San Francisco Shock. This new pairing will allow the Outlaws to embark on a strong player development program with the goal of transforming one of the Overwatch League’s most popular teams into a top performing roster.
Junkbuck is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara.
