Beasley Esports announces Jake Lyon (aka “Junkrat”) has returned home to a dual role with the Overwatch League’s Houston Outlaws. Lyon officially broke the big news last night during an exclusive interview with Robby Landis on CheckpointXP.
Lyon initially stepped away from the Outlaws to pursue a place on the Overwatch League caster desk in 2019. In addition to playing on the team, he will now serve as Director of Talent Development, where he will work directly with Co-Head Coaches Harsha and Junkbuck, as well as with individual players to help them develop and succeed as a team.
In his new role, Lyon will be one of just two original Outlaws players remaining with the organization, alongside Matt Iorio (aka “Cool Matt”), who was promoted to General Manager of the Houston Outlaws this past October.
“For me, 2020 was about resting and resetting,” said Lyon. “I know for sure I needed the break and wasn’t ready to compete last season But, in the last year, I feel like I’ve changed so many aspects of my life. I’m in a position now mentally and emotionally that I actually miss competition.”
Lyon added, “What’s interesting about my position now is that it’s a dual role. I’m actually going to be playing as well as working as a player development coach. What it means to me is that I’ll be making the team as strong as it can be whether on I am on the field of play or not.”
“Jake’s passion, leadership and magnetic personality will reinvigorate the Outlaws and elevate the team to new heights in 2021 and beyond,” said Iorio. “His skill set as a veteran competitor will prove invaluable to developing our new roster into one that can meet it’s maximum potential and fully focus on winning.”
“We are excited to have Jake returning to the Outlaws in an expanded role as Coach, Player, and Brand Ambassador,” said Lori Burgess, Chief Operating Officer at Beasley Esports. “His leadership, analytical and competitive skills, combined with his charisma, business savvy, and fanbase, make him the perfect and final addition to our 2021 bench!”
